"Active Councils are Successful Councils"
It is a very simple formula: The more active your council is with charitable initiatives in the parish and the community, the more people will see and appreciate the good works that the Order performs, and the easier it will be to recruit qualified Catholic men into your Council. Its a circular process that benefits both the new member, your Council, your parish and your community. (Knightline - November 2013)

AIDING EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
8/29/2016 - The Knights of Columbus will donate $50,000 to the Holy Father to help provide relief for children affected by last week’s deadly earthquake northeast of Rome.
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson informed Pope Francis of the donation when he greeted the pope at an audience Sunday, Aug. 28.
That conversation followed the Holy Father’s angelus address in which he prayed for the victims and noted that the rapid response to the quake shows “how important solidarity is in overcoming such painful trials.” The Pope continued by noting that “service to one’s brothers and sisters becomes a testimony of love, which makes God’s love credible.”
“The Knights of Columbus is pleased to answer the Holy Father’s call and to assist those, especially children, who are suffering so much as a result of this devastating disaster in Italy,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Consistent with our first principle, charity, and as we have done in situations of natural disasters and other needs in the United States and around the world, the Knights of Columbus is committed to showing solidarity and God’s mercy concretely through our help of those most in need.”
The Knights' support for earthquake victims comes at the same time that the organization has donated substantially in terms of funds and volunteers to the victims of the recent floods in Louisiana.

PRAYER FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS
O God of all the nations, the One God who is and was and always will be, in your providence you willed that your Church be united to the suffering of your Son. Look with mercy on your servants who are persecuted for their faith in you. Grant them perseverance and courage to be worthy imitators of Christ.
Bring your wisdom upon leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples.
May your Spirit open conversion for those who contradict your will, that we may live in harmony. Give us the grace to be united in truth and freedom, and to always seek your will in our lives.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us.

Knights of Columbus Pledge ‘More of Everything’
for Mideast Christians in Major Campaign
The Knights of Columbus is one of the Catholic Church's biggest service organizations.
And now they're helping to take on one of Christianity's biggest challenges in modern times.
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson announced at a recent press conference that the Knights would be working to "expose the crimes against humanity that are being committed” against Christians in the Middle East.
August 4th, 2015 - At the 133rd annual international convention in Philadelphia, reported the the Knights of Columbus will continue delivering humanitarian aid to the region, as he announced the Knights’ new, massive push to raise money for the Christian Refugee Relief Fund at a Tuesday news conference during the 2015 Supreme Convention in Philadelphia. The campaign will raise as much funds as possible to support the Middle East’s churches and Christians weathering the persecution and unrest that has gripped much of the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Syria, following the takeover of much of those countries’ territory by Islamic State militants.
"We know that there is much more that needs to be done. Food and education are sorely needed. More housing, more medical care. More of everything, actually, is needed by people who have literally nothing. And the Knights of Columbus will reimburse all of the administrative costs of this program. So 100 percent of the money donated to this cause will go to the people who need help.”

A Story of Hope & Healing in Haiti
A documentary about hope and healing in the midst of the horrific aftermath of Haiti’s 2010 earthquake will be a featured presentation at the Portland Film Festival on Saturday, Aug. 30.
“Unbreakable: A Story of Hope and Healing in Haiti” tells the amazing story of children who not
only recovered physically, but also helped recast the perception of the disabled in Haiti — a country that is often considered one of the poorest in the world.
“This film shows that when there is the will do so — both in terms of those
providing aid and those receiving it — lives can be saved and transformed by a
program that is truly sustainable,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson,
executive producer of the documentary. “The work of the dedicated medical staff
and the unbreakable spirit of these Haitian young people — in circumstances most
of us can’t imagine — are truly inspiring.”

Knights of Columbus Announces Fund To Help Christians
Threatened With Extinction In Iraq. 8/11/2014
Commits 1 Million and Seeks Public Donations for Humanitarian Aid to Religious Minorities
The Knights of Columbus announced today that is establishing a fund to assist those – particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities – facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions.
The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public.
“The unprovoked and systematic persecution and violent elimination of Middle East Christians, as well as other minority groups, especially in Iraq, has created an enormous humanitarian crisis,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Pope Francis has asked the world for prayers and support for those affected by this terrible persecution, and we are asking our members, and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and support efforts to assist them by donating to this fund.”
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson added: “It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia – simply for their faith. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of the freedom of conscience, and provide them with whatever relief we can.”
Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting www.kofc.org/Iraq or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966.
Checks should be made out to - Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc.
Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for those Christians – as well as other religious minorities –being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding region.

Knights of Columbus Supreme Chaplain
Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore
is the U.S. Bishops Religious Liberties Committee Chair
Baltimore, Md., Jul 22, 2014- In a recent interview with CNA, Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore reaffirmed religious liberty as a priority for the U.S. bishops, emphasizing its relation to personal dignity and evangelization.
“Let me just say that religious liberty is so fundamental to the dignity of the human person,” Archbishop Lori stated, continuing that “anyone who is an impartial observer of the culture would say that in recent times, the challenges to religious liberty have accelerated. This committee deals with affronts to religious liberty coming from such things as international persecution of minority religions; the re-definition of marriage; and challenges to religious practice and speech on university campuses.
“This is a very fundamental focus on the life and dignity of the human person, and the ability of the Church to contribute to the common good.”

named as "One of 13 Insurance Industry Heroes you need to Know" (July 17th, 2014)
Describe what you do. Because we are a fraternal benefit society whose first principle is charity, my work entails focusing both on the enormous charitable outreach that we do — $170 million and 70 million hours donated by Knights last year — and on the top-rated insurance program that we provide to our members. We are rated A++ by A.M. Best, with $94 billion in insurance in force and $21 billion in assets under management. We have seen solid growth in our charitable giving and our insurance business over the past decade and a half, so my yearly calendar is filled with a mix of insurance, business, Church and charitable meetings, activities and events.
Describe how you’ve experienced such strong growth in the Knights’ financial resources, especially that of life insurance. We work hard at what you might call mission integrity. The Knights of Columbus was founded more than 130 years ago to protect the financial future of Catholic families in the event of the tragic death of a breadwinner and to provide charity to those on the margins of society. Today, those same founding principles are at work in every aspect of our business, guiding our corporate governance, our professional agency force, our investments, and our day-to-day business operations. It is this continued commitment to our foundational principles that is the key to our ethical, sustainable and successful business model.
What excites you most about the insurance industry today? What excites me most about the insurance industry today is that when tragedy strikes a family, we’ve done something to protect their future, and we have been doing that since 1882.

Fortune Ranks Pope Francis as
"The Worlds Greatest Leader"
“Just over a year ago, a puff of white smoke announced
the new spiritual leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics around the world,”
writes Fortune, in its paragraph on the Latin American Pope. “In the brief time since, Francis has electrified the church and attracted legions of non-Catholic admirers by energetically setting a new direction.”
He created a group of eight cardinals to advise him on reform, which a church historian calls the "most important step in the history of the church for the past 10 centuries." His hardest work lies ahead. And yet signs of a "Francis effect" abound: In a poll in March, one in four Catholics said they'd increased their charitable giving to the poor this year. Of those, 77% said it was due in part to the Pope.

Pope Francis, The People’s Pope
Times Magazine - "PERSON OF THE YEAR"
Let the New Evangelization begin!
On March 13, Bergoglio inherited the throne of St. Peter—keeper of the
keys to the kingdom of heaven—he made this request of the world.
"Pray for me."
"What makes this Pope so important is the speed with which he has captured the
imaginations of millions who had given up on hoping for the church at all." In a matter of months, Francis has elevated the healing mission of the
church, as servant and comforter of hurting people in an often harsh
world
He took the name of a humble saint and then called for a church of healing.
Jorge Bergoglio is the first Pope to choose as his namesake Francis of Assisi, the 13th century patron saint of the poor.
The first non-European pope in 1,200 years is poised to transform a place that measures change by the century.
And so Francis signals great change while giving the same answers to the
uncomfortable questions. On the question of female priests: “We need to work
harder to develop a profound theology of the woman.” Which means: no. No to
abortion, because an individual life begins at conception. No to gay marriage,
because the male-female bond is established by God. “The teaching of the church
… is clear,” he has said, “and I am a son of the church, but”—and here he adds
his prayer for himself—“it is not necessary to talk about those issues all the
time.”
“Argue less, accomplish more” could be a healing motto for our times. We have a
glut of problems to tackle. Francis says by example, Stop bickering and roll up
your sleeves. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good!"

Knights of Columbus wins prize for ethical business practices :: Catholic News Agency (CNA)
By Kevin J. Jones (March 24, 2014)
The fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus has been recognized as one of the world’s most ethical companies by a research center on best practices incorporate ethics and governance. “This really speaks to the fact that a company can be committed to Church teaching,
committed to Catholic values, and still provide a top quality service and be very successful at what they do,” Andrew Walther, vice president for communications and media with the Knights, told CNA March 21.
Timothy Erblich, CEO of the Ethisphere Institute, announced the award March 20, saying “the Knights of Columbus join an exclusive community committed to driving performance through leading business practices. We congratulate everyone at Knights of Columbus for this extraordinary achievement.”
The institute named the New Haven, Conn.-based Catholic fraternal organization and life insurance company to its 2014 World’s Most Ethical Company list. The Knights is only one of two companies in the life insurance category to be recognized.
The assessment is based on consideration of an organization’s ethics and compliance programs; its reputation, leadership and innovation; governance; corporate citizenship and responsibility; and culture of ethics.
Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the fraternal organization, noted that it began more than 130 years ago to protect Catholic families who lose their breadwinner and to provide charity for those “on the margins of society.”
“Today, those same founding principles are at work in every aspect of our business, guiding our corporate governance, our professional agency force, our investments, and our day-to-day business operations,” Anderson said in a statement. “It is this continued commitment to our foundational, Catholic principles that is the key to our ethical, sustainable and successful business model.”
Walther added that the award is a testament to the fraternal benefit society’s commitment to “the same core Catholic founding values that have always guided our operations.” The Knights take the idea of fraternity “very, very seriously.”“The idea of a strong brotherhood based on faith is something that is critical to forces for good in the world.” The Knights’ insurance agent is himself a member of the organization. He provides insurance and long-term planning services to “his brother knights,” Walther explained. Agents aim at “really doing the best possible job” for insured members while working to follow the principle of protecting Catholic families established by the order’s founder, Father Michael J. McGivney. “The entire idea is to have a company that really follows Catholic teaching.”
The Knights try to show their Catholic values “every step of the way” in its dealings with members, employees, and investments. The organization does not invest in companies whose actions “clash” with Catholic teaching, including companies involved in pornography, abortion, and “a host of other issues that would be antithetical to Catholic teaching.” This means that insured members and families can have “the peace of mind that comes from dealing with people who share their values” and also work with a“top-rated insurer,” Walther said.
Rather than having to pay shareholders, the Knights direct insurance proceeds back to the community through charitable programs in the U.S. and around the world. These programs help those in need and support local parishes, dioceses around the world, and the Vatican.
The Knights of Columbus offers insurance to members and their immediate families. The order has about 950 employees and almost 2 million insurance policies in force, totaling $93 billion in value. There are more than 1.8 million Knights of Columbus in 15,000 councils around the world, and the organization donated more than $167.5 million and 70 million volunteer hours to charitable causes in 2013.
